Dear Ann Landers:
I am writing you because I want all of America to realize there is a limit to how much a teacher can do without parental cooperation.
I taught for 27 years before retiring. I know a lot about children and how they spend their time. A large percentage of our schoolchildren do not go home to loving parents. They go to a day care centers or empty houses. There is no one to supervise their homework. Then their parents rush through dinner so they can clean the house and do laundry. There is no time for the children's needs. The same hurried activity goes on in the morning before school.
No wonder our children have trouble learning. They have no calming influence, no security in their lives. I'd like to ask those parents a question: Is that bigger house or
new car worth as much as your child's well-being? Parents need to wake up and accept responsibility for their children's educations and stop blaming the schools.
— Durant, Okla.
Dear Durant:
Some parents need to work in order to keep roofs over their heads and food on the table. However, those parents who could be home for their children but choose to be elsewhere should pay close attention to what you have written. It's a pretty good sermon.
